Today is part 1 of a 2 Part post on the importance of establishing your own unique company mission statement.
Whether you’re starting a business online or traditional, your goals and aspirations should be centered on your mission statement. If everything you do in life is simply based on your own mission statement you will be successful.
Every business needs a purpose that says what it is, and a vision that describes what it wants to be. This purpose and vision come together in the mission statement. A mission statement then becomes the starting point for the development of business goals, and goals are the basis for setting measurable results. Since it all starts with a mission, this is obviously a critical part of creating your business.
A company mission statement is a declaration of what a business aspires to be. The statement is the business’ reason for being, a public statement of why it exists, a clarification of who it serves, and an expression of what it hopes to achieve in the future. A carefully crafted mission statement accurately describes the business and inspires the people who contribute to its success.
Technorati is now tracking over 70 million weblogs, and we’re seeing about 120,000 new weblogs being created worldwide each day. That’s about 1.4 blogs created every second of every day.”
The question is what will set your blog or business apart from that seemingly infinite number? What will make your business different? You must identify who you are. More importantly you must identify who you are not. Like the rest of you I read about internet guru’s like John Chow. I visit his site. I discovered one very important indisputable fact. I’m not John Chow. Fact # 2, I never will be. Most of you reading this post will never be either.
That should not stop you or me from pursuing our own unique passions and developing those into our business, but you need a foundation from which to operate. That is your mission statement. Make your mission statement, state your business.
Just as important as the mission statement, is the process of writing the statement. This process helps a new or established business clarify questions such as:
- What business are you really in?
- What type of business do you want to be?
- What is your target market?
- What inspires you?
The place to begin is to realize that the process of writing a mission statement is an inclusive process. All members of the e-business team must be involved in the process. Even if you are a one person show, take the time to think this through. More to Come in Part 2 of this post
