Today is Part 2 of a a post about creating a mission statement. It should give you a start to actually brainstorming and writing you own unique statement. Remember that old saying, “As you think, so shall you be.” Your business is no different. I hope you set aside some of your valuable time to create yours , because not doing so makes you like the majority of the 70 million plus sites out there that we talked about in Part 1 of this post. After all don’t you want to set yourself apart from the crowd?
A good place to start is with the vision part of the statement. In a brainstorming session, conduct the following exercises to clarify what you and others intend for the business to be:
- List 5-10 words or phrases that describe your business. Focus on the three most important.
- List 3-5 words or phrases that describe the company’s ideal image from your customer’s perspective.
- List 3-5 words or phrases that describe the company’s ideal image from your staff
This vision must be tempered with a focus on the purpose of the business:
- List the market opportunities and/or customer needs that your company intends to address (the business’ value proposition).
- Who are your customers? List the company’s primary and secondary target markets
- With your customers in mind, list each service or product your business will provide.
- List 3-5 ways to define of your business’ success.
- Consider every idea, no matter how silly it sounds. Stimulate ideas by looking at sample mission statements and thinking about or discussing the questions in the previous section. Write down a few options and let your partners or friends shoot holes in them. The process of involving all your team members will only reinforce their own desire to implement the final statement
Listed below are a few examples from some larger companies.
3M
“To solve unsolved problems innovatively”
Mary Kay Cosmetics
“To give unlimited opportunity to women.”
Merck
“To preserve and improve human life.”
Wal-Mart
“To give ordinary folk the chance to buy the same thing as rich people.”
“To make people happy.”
While these two are not nearly as famous the content and focus is spot on!
To constantly strive to meet or exceed our customer needs and expectations of price, service, and selection. To this end, we will perform periodic reviews of the marketplace to improve our offerings.
To stay ahead of the competition by innovating new products and services based on the needs of our customers and market demand.”
I have also added a book to my store for your resource and consideration. 101
You are only limited by motivation and imagination to succeed in your goals. I once had a friend who told me “shoot for the moon and if you come up short you’ll be among the stars” I am not sure who the author was but I have never forgotten it. Goals, aspirations, and initiative are important components to owning any successful business. Centering these as the framework for your business success will keep you and your organization focused.
“Never stop investing. Never stop improving. Never stop doing something new. The moment you stop improving your organization, it starts to die. Make it your goal to be better each and every day, in some small way.” There will be days when it just doesn’t seem to click for you. That is normal and necessary. Never quit. “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.”
In closing I want to leave you with a little anecdote.
“A tired-out rail-splitter crouched over his tattered books by candlelight or by fire-glow, at the day’s end; preparing for his future, instead of snoring or skylarking like his co-laborers. Abraham Lincoln cut out his path to later immortality—in his spare time.
