Taking Responsibility For Your Attitude

Our society today teaches and embraces the idea of NOT taking responsibility for anything, especially if it produces a negative result or circumstance. Most of us are quick to accept praise and frankly we all enjoy that. Conversely, most are not willing to accept responsibility when things go wrong and often try to deflect the root of the problem to someone else.

Your attitude right, wrong or indifferent is not a result of your circumstances, your personal history or the fact that the sun didn’t shine today. It comes from within you. When you awoke this morning you chose your attitude for the day. Did you say, Gosh, I hate alarms clocks; I hate going to work; I don’t want to go to work. I have said all of those in my mind from time to time. Your first thoughts of the day were negative, and thus you set a course for the day that will dictate your actions and decisions. The bottom-line is you and you alone are responsible for your attitude. It is not your mother, the economy, world peace, or your inability to pay your bills. You have a choice each and everyday. While we are here, what was your choice today?

So where are you now with your attitude

I am going to assume that you might have seen something in the opening paragraph that brought you to this one. Perhaps enough interest that you are thinking about a change. Maybe you even thought of someone you might want to share this with. Then you will need a road map to give to them or yourself to get there. You have just about decided to take responsibility for your attitude, but how? Where do you go from here?

Every journey, every change you purpose to make in you life or in your business must begin with an evaluation of where you are. This may not be for the faint of heart. Honest personal evaluation never is. I liken it to having my teeth pulled. You get the point.

Attitude problems often root themselves around people. So let’s start with a very important person that you know very well. YOU. How do you feel about yourself? Be objective and don’t beat yourself up. That is not the intent here. Do you have negative thoughts? What are they? Ever notice how those negative thoughts seem to preoccupy your thinking. We’ll talk about changing your thinking later. For now make an inventoried list of the things that prevent you from having a positive attitude. Identify and purpose to rectify. You will not change your attitude for the better unless you know what is affecting it for the worse. Take your time on this it will be worth it. We are the sum of our thoughts.

You have to desire the change

So you have decided to take responsibility for your attitude and identified some problem areas with your thought life. You might be wondering, “okay this better be get better soon or I’m outta here”. Stay with me it will.

You have to want to change. Sounds easy right? Its not. We can pay all the lip service we want to regarding the will to change. If you don’t initiate the action to change in your heart and soul it will not happen. Lots of people desire improvement in their finances, personal relationships and their business. At the same time, they resist change with a passion and determination that could win wars. Ask yourself a simple question right now. Are you going to try and get a better attitude or is your attitude as good as its going to get? If you have made it this far, I know your answer.

Changing your thinking Changes your attitude

A college professor once told me, you read like you eat fish. You pick the meat and leave the bones. This is where the meat is. Taste it, savor it and it will nourish you.

You were just told you are being fired form your job. What would your thought process be? Oh my how am I going to pay my bills? What am I going to do? Who will help me? What are my friends going to think? Perhaps you will say, well I was looking for a job when I found this one and I will find another. Its important because your thinking prompts your emotions and your attitude is your emotional approach to life. You are not what you think you are, but what you think …you are. How do you change your thinking? Negative thoughts overwhelm you. Replace all the garbage with good stuff. Try this. Think of the number 8 for a few minutes; think about 8 over and over, the number 8 the number 8. Okay stop! Now Stop! I know you’re trying but the number 8 is stuck in there. Get it out! Okay let’s get it out. Think, what is 2+ 2? Seven Times 2? Ask yourself questions about anything that doesn’t pertain to that number. What you have done is replace the number 8 with other things and that my friend, is how you begin to purge your mind of all the negative. Take your negative thoughts and replace them, systematically one by one.

Last November I underwent a quintuple bypass on my heart. I was in the hospital for days and the recovery is ongoing. At first all my thoughts were consumed with my heart condition. I lay awake each night fearful of falling to sleep and not waking up. I spent nights and days counting my own heartbeat, but the day came when I didn’t have to count anymore. My new thoughts were about keeping my surgically repaired heart healthy and my outlook completely changed. I took control of my thoughts, and my thoughts took control of my attitude and subsequently my actions.

Lets take this approach to your online business. You take a look at your site and numbers are down. Your sales are non-existent. You begin to think negatively. This will never work. It’s costing me money I don’t have. The result, you are now paralyzed by your own thoughts. Remember step one; you are responsible for your own thoughts. Left unchecked and these thoughts develop into a habit, the habit repeats itself in a vicious cycle. Negative thoughts=negative beliefs=wrong decisions=wrong actions=continuous actions and then it starts over.

Sales are not made sitting at a computer or sitting in someone’s office. They are generated within you. Do you have a passion and the right attitude for what you are doing? Do you believe that the product or service you are selling will benefit the customer? If so, the deal is all but done, just close it.

Manage your attitude every day

So the question is where are you today with your thoughts? Are they negative? Are they positive? The difference between the two can have a profound effect on your business and your life. Our lives become a series of habits over time. I bet you put your pants on or button that blouse the same way everyday. So too, is your thinking process. You must begin each day with a choice about your attitude. Life is too short to go about it grumping, moaning, and complaining about how unfair it is. Remember the alarm clock? When it goes off tomorrow, think oh my I’m glad I have that click so I can get started on another day, I can’t wait. Choose joy early and often. Assume cheerfulness you do not feel and shortly you feel cheerfulness you assumed.

Take responsibility for your attitude; acknowledge how it can change your outlook on things. Manage it everyday; develop positive thoughts and thus habits. Your attitude will become your greatest business asset and it won’t cost you a dime.

I agree completely. I am one of those that used to have a bad attitude. One day the boss took me aside and said, ‘Tim, you know your stuff. But I can’t promote you unless you can learn to get along with everyone a little better. Do you want to see if you can clean up your act?’ At first I was upset. After I thought about it, I realized he was right. I did my best to shape up, and before I knew it, I was moved up to supervisor, with better pay and a company vehicle. And I only had to improve my attitude your ‘2′ spots. I also agree that some skills will never be learned by some individuals. This also goes for attitude if they don’t want to co-operate.

Actually he filed papers that declared intent to apply. That indecision and lack of initiative cost Gray some money. He complained in court that he had come up with the idea first. You know what the judge decided. You are just as talented in some area of your life, that talent without initiative will never reach it potential. You have a choice. […]

Great post Don. One thing I learned through books and teachers was to always look for the solutions rather than the problems we face. When you do that, you put your mind into constant solution mode instead of just fretting over the fact you have a problem. Too many people are stubborn and stuck in the negative pattern that “life sucks”.
