Expand your Home Based Business with your Brains not your Hands

Years ago, actually more years ago than I care to remember I was a young business owner who thought knew everything. Have you ever met that type of person? As a young man I was full of energy and could work on 2-3 hours of sleep if necessary. The do whatever it took attitude I had was going to make me rich. I figured if I worked harder than anyone I would have more success than anyone. At age 22 I had a thriving service business, a family and more money to pay the bills than I needed. It is kind of nice when there is more money at the end of the month, than having more month than money.

I rented office and warehouse space from a gentleman who became my business mentor named Burt Phillips. He would eventually sell that building to me and I eventually sold it for a nice profit. We would sit in his office and he would tell me how he was making money and try to impart his knowledge on a young man who as I look back had none. He always asked me how was business and I would always tell him how great it was, how long I had worked and how much money I was making.

One day I walked in his office for a chat and he had what appeared to be 50-60 envelopes on his desk. He looked at me, picked up the envelopes with both hands and told me “Don I’m cashing in”. The envelopes contained Property Tax notices. He had made his money buying and selling real estate and his time in business had come to an end. He handed me the notice on the building we were in and I eventually bought it from him.
It was that day that he taught me the most important business lesson he ever shared. He told me if I were ever going to make real money I would have to expand my business with my brains not my hands. I frankly did not know if he was insulting me or encouraging me.

He went on to say “Don as good as you are at what you do, you have a productive ceiling on what you can do with your hands. There are so many hours in a day and no matter what you do , how good you are at time management, your capability is going to top out at a certain point. You have to reproduce yourself through your brains with other people. It was like he turned on a light; remember I was in my early 20′s.

I have a neighbor who carves candles. Each day he goes out to his garage carves candles for while, then ships them, markets them, buys his supplies, picks up his supplies , and then does it again the next day. He does very well and the profit margin on his product is high. He has refined his methods, procedures to get his production to its maximum. His best days usually will produce about a 100 candles. The point is by himself the best he can hope for has already been reached. The young man is has a brilliant mind and we often brainstorm together, different ideas and concepts for business. What if he expanded his business through his brains and hand picked a few people to help? Yes, perhaps he will have more overhead but, that would free up his mind for other projects.
I recently read a post on Dane Carlson’s Business Opportunities Weblog about a man in his 50′s who has pulled 120 grand out of Adsense sharing his knowledge about being a Handyman! That is what I mean about using your brains. I don’t care how good a Handyman he was, is, or was ever going to be, he was never going to make that kind of money with his hands. Ahh…. but his brains got him launched into the elite by creating a Home Based Business.

I suppose many reading this post are trying out their own Home Based Business. Many are trying to make money online with blogs, websites, and selling ads, what ever they can do to get the click. Many idolize the big boys like Chow and Shoemoney. Their success in the online business is well documented. I promise you this, they are not doing it by themselves nor are they doing it with their hands. Both of these young men use their brains. I suspect it’s difficult for them to ever stop thinking, creating and implementing new ideas. They make money and lots of it, through their brains, not their hands.
You are not limited to blogging for your source of income in your Home Based Business. What are you good at? What knowledge base do you have? Take an hour a day and turn on your brain. Expand you market share through your brains in whatever arena you choose!
