Fear of Failure and Home Based Business

Perhaps the biggest obstacle you will face in starting your home based business is yourself. I interviewed 5 people for this post.

Each possess unique knowledge, skills and abilities. Each of them could be successful in business. It is likely none of them will. Why? Because of fear. The common denominator with these potential profiteers is fear.

As each told me of their fear I could hardly contain my objective mindset. I asked each of them, what are you scared of? 5 of the 5 I talked to stated FAILURE as their primary fear. The ‘Fear of Failure Report’ released by NESTA, reveals that nearly one in three (29%) people have had what they thought was a great business idea or invention but eight out of 10 of those didn’t do a thing about it. When asked why, 61% said that they didn’t know where to start. I’ll get back to these people later in this post.
So 80% of people with a great idea never share it with the world because of fear. Of these 5 people I interviewed one is a Photoshop prodigy. Think he could make money telling people about how to use Photoshop? Another can write copy like a seasoned journalist. I know for certain there are opportunities for her. Statistically neither will capitalize on their skills. Because they are friends of Making Sales Making Money both will be prodded and encouraged not to become a statistic, but internet infopreneurs.
Why are you afraid of failure?
Most people fear failure for one of these two reasons:
• Failure makes you a bad person, a “loser” that others look down on. The heck with what people think!
• You could lose all or most of your money and/or your possessions. Don’t be ridiculous, you can structure your business in such a way as to limit your liability.
As somebody else has said, 90 percent of the things we fear never happen. That leaves us 10% for failure. Everyone fears failure to some degree. But breakthroughs depend on it. The best companies embrace their mistakes and learn from them. Remember this “champions are born in the labor of defeat.” Failures are a necessary component of success. Embrace them, celebrate them and move on.
I know of another lady who recently won $150,000.00 in an Online Stock Trading Game hosted by TheStreet.com and Jim Cramer. A business associate of mine is working with her developing a blog/website for her home based business about trading in the stock market. She too, is faced with the same fear discussed in this post. She will have a minimal investment monetarily. Her only real commitment is putting in time writing her content. She possesses a great deal knowledge and passion and that is what will establish her in her own online home based business. So where do you start? Start by changing your attitude about failure. For some that is quite the challenge so start slow. Got a great idea for a business? Have knowledge the masses don’t? Put it to work NOW in your own on-line business.

I don’t understand your math. If 61% say they “don’t know where to start”, how can you conclude that 80% “never share it…because of fear.” You can’t simply say their concerns boil down to “fear”. They may not have time to figure out how to start, or may not feel it is worth it, all things considered. These are perfectly rational concerns.

Great post Rick certainly there are more concerns than fear in and of itself. Of the 5 I interviewed all cited fear of failure as their # 1 concern. Where that fear is rooted was not narrowed down to the specific. By the way the lady I spoke of in the post registered a domain name and will begin her journey in the online writing business.
