Writing Content in your own Unique Voice

Often times some friends or business associates that know me personally will see me and mention that they read my latest post. Sometimes complimentary, sometimes critical, but they always say that as they were reading the thought entered their mind, “that’s sounds just like Don”. I choose to take that as a compliment. Why?
Because all of us want to be unique. It is born in us. A big challenge for any new or experienced blogger is to come up with original content. Adding content to your blog or website has to be original but just as importantly has to be delivered in your own unique voice. You are building relationships through a computer screen; it has to be you and no one else. More often than not when prospecting for new clients to publish what I know to be successful business ideas I hear, “but I can’t write like you do Don”. I never thought could write either.
Here’s the deal, I’ve said this before,if you can talk, you can write. Simple as that. Not so simple? Try this the next time you set out to pound out that Pulitzer winning piece. Just start writing as if you were talking to someone. Don’t worry about typos, and don’t give it a lot of thought just pound the keys. Keep pounding.
As you get to a place where you feel like a wrap up to you post in closing in, tie a bow on it. Stop. Now read it back to yourself ….OUTLOUD. Does it sound like you talking or is it a sub-conscious attempt to be someone you’re not. It should flow just as it does when you speak, at least the way most of us speak. Your goal is to draw the reader into your personality with your words on the screen. Have you ever thought to yourself, that guy is phony, or she is a fake? Readers will see right through the same way. I suspect not everyone likes you in your circle of influence. Maybe more than you think. The same thing will hold true in your writing. You will not attract everyone. I was visiting my favorite blogs today and posted on a few like I always do. I saw the usual exchange of pleasantries; you know the type, what a great post! Or thanks for the super post, etc.
I also saw some vicious attacks on the authors. I’m not wired that way personally, but some are. My point is the author did his or her job, conveying a message in a unique voice that provoked a comment. Good job.
So what if you write that great post and nobody comments. My thought is, who cares.
Move on to the next one, maybe you are still finding your groove, maybe the subject matter wasn’t as popular as you thought. Your job and you have already chosen to accept it is .. Deliver your content in your own unique voice. Write what you mean, and mean what you write. You are who you are and adding a couple of designer adjectives to your sentences isn’t going to change that. Just keep it real

I agree, in this day and age where there are so many blogs (and other news sources) competing for our attention, if you don’t have a unique voice your words will just sink into the oblivious of information overload.
