Searching for Significance Online

We all need it
Perhaps one of our most basic needs is the need to feel significant. We are that way in our everyday life. Searching for significance with every person we discover. Some want to be known as significant for what they do in their respective communities. Others want to be known as good mothers, or parents. Whatever we do somehow needs to be validated by others before we can feel good about ourselves; but what are you dong for you online visitors?
Make you site visitors feel Significant
Our online presence is really no different. We want to be heard. We want to write that one post that someone will Stumble. That brings traffic, thus we feel significant. So how do you go about making your readers feel significant online? The challenge is not all that different than face-to-face conversation in my view.
We all need to be heard. We all comment on various posts around the blogosphere. Sometimes we leave comments to garner a few hits to our own page. Sometimes the post stirs us so much, we feel compelled to leave a comment. Different points of view make the world go round. The root of all of it is the need to feel significant. It’s almost like we cast our vote, our comment, in hopes of swaying someone, somewhere, to our particular stance. Regardless of your motives, you are attempting to feel significant, and hopefully you have.
I recently read a post on Entrepreneurs- Journey.com written by Rich Schefren about giving your customers attention. How do you accomplish that? Borrowed from the post comes this golden nugget
We owe it to ourselves, and certainly to others, to strengthen our attention and use it as a force to improve our relationships and business interests
This struck a chord with me. As some of you may have read on this site, my belief is nothing worthwhile can happen outside of a good relationship. Nothing.
Make it an Action plan for you Home Based Business
For those wondering if I make money online, the answer is I do. However, I make more money with people I come in contact with everyday. Don’t underestimate what can be done for your business in your everyday life away from the keyboard.
This site is void of lots of advertisements; there are a few, because it’s not ready for that. I am still building relationships with my visitors. That’s why the above post hit me so hard. I believe it and I live it.
Listening to what they have to say is of paramount importance. Why did they visit your site to begin with? What can you do to make them feel significant? What can you do to bring them back?
For starters your online relationships won’t be built as fast as they are off-line. It will require more time. All bloggers read their comments, if one tells you they don’t , they are being less than truthful. There is much to be gleaned from these virtual conversations. Additionally, there are many relationships to be forged. It starts with listening to what they have to say. A response is validation for whatever position they have taken in a given post. They feel significant and are likely to return.
I write e-mails everyday to various bloggers when I have something significant to say. The process has helped me to develop several online relationships. I wrote yesterday of chatting with Brian Garner about my new theme. We traded e-mails for about an hour and my new blog theme was born. More importantly a relationship was formed. I plan on adding a few more sites in 2008. Where do you suppose I might go to get my technical work done? He listened to me, paid attention to me, and validated my thoughts and desires for my blog. He also got a PayPal payment from me. I felt significant.
Many believe they are making their site visitors and potential customers feel significant. Earlier I commented on Rich Schefren’s post;
Lest any us think we give/pay attention to someone, try this the with the next person you come in contact with, LISTEN, just listen to what they have to say, add a comment only to provoke them to talk more, so you can LISTEN more. All of us are searching for significance on some level. One sure fire way to make them feel significant is to LISTEN to what they have to say. Perhaps some of the strongest relationships I have were built on the foundation of listening, meeting people right where they were and listening. Want proof? All of us commented on this post, generally for one purpose, to be heard and even if it was for a moment, we felt significant, I know I did. Build your business by building relationships. Make your site visitors feel significant. Solid relationships online today = Customers tomorrow.
