A Guide to Becoming an Infopreneur, Part 2

frustarted.jpgYesterday we talked about choosing a niche with what you already know. I don’t expect many readers to have zeroed in on your specific niche yet, but I do hope you have been giving it some thought. This is a very important decision in establishing your existence and survival as an infopreneur. Think about the home based business opportunities that may be presenting themselves to you. Remember you are an expert already! Let’s assume you thought about it and reached a decision. Good job! Thinking is a passive activity, but necessary. Let see of we can put some legs to your idea. Time for your action plan.

Your next step will be choosing a domain name

I have already confessed to you Making Sales Making Money was not the best choice for a domain name when I started this blog. Hopefully you are not going to make the same mistake I did. Are you?
You should be in possession of some high value keywords obtained form your niche concept research. That’s a good place to start. If I were doing my site over again, Home Based Business, or Home Based Business Opportunities would likely be my url somewhere. How important are keywords? Yesterday I mentioned reef tanks as one of my areas of expertise. Today I had a visitor to my site that searched reef aquariums on Google. To the best of my recollection, that is the first time I have used that phrase.

Just in case you think I am a complete idiot

I have another site in development. Besides the 3 niche examples I listed in Part 1 of this series, I enjoy cooking. I probably enjoy eating more, but that is another niche. I did some research on cooking, which obviously proved to be a very broad topic. I narrowed it down to heart healthy cooking. Now that worked better. I am a self taught expert in heart healthy cooking. Undergoing quintuple bypass surgery a bit over a year ago has made me an expert. Teaching myself to eat fruits and vegetables, instead of slamming down 2 double quarter pound hamburgers is something I can speak to with authority.
While my site is not a blog, heart-healthy-cooking.com is alive and in its infancy, while I add content. That domain was chosen correctly.

I’ve listed a few ideas for you to consider when choosing you domain. You may consider others. Looking at the big picture may help you. Think about where you want your site to be a year from now.

A good domain…
• is short and sharp
• is meaningful — conveys a clear message
• is easy to spell
• is easy to remember
• is unique, descriptive, and “you”
• is solid, classic
• contains your Site Concept keyword for Search Engine visitors

These points are all well and good, and should be followed whenever possible. However, finding the exact, perfect domain name is getting impossible. You can try several different variations of your domain name before you find one that is available.
To dash or not to dash

A general rule of thumb is if your domain has 3 or more words uses dashes. It certainly is easier to read for the human eye. The search engines usually treat a dash as a space. So it may be more likely to “see” the entire string as separate words. Example, which is easier to read, makingsalesmakingmoney.com or making-sales-making-money.com? Another mistake I made. When spoken by mouth, I do think its kind of catchy!
Many times you will find the dash version available where the other is not. Before you use it, consider any legal issues you may run into down the road. Nothing would be worse than a cease and desist letter, 6 months after you get your site running. Sometimes you will get lucky and both will be available. Can’t decide? You can park them both until you do and redirect potential traffic to your primary domain. Parking domain names is usually very inexpensive, 10 bucks or so.

Perfection is not possible

Ultimately your site will attract visitors because of the valued content you provide. Don’t get hung up with your perfection issues here and become frustrated. Remember there is no perfect choice. Choose it, register it and you will be ready for the next step, the look and feel of your site. We will discuss that in the next post for this series.

Wondering about monetization?

It is coming but we are not there yet. Hang in there with me we will. Hint, monetization will be the last thing we will do.

Good breakdown on Domain names. I’ve screwed up a couple of those too, from frustration with not finding one that’s available.
