Content Writing with Prejudice, Procrastination and Perfection

Responsibilities, assignments and duties don’t just go away now that you own a home based business. You are now charged with the task for insuring their completion. If you are like most, you are doing this by yourself. It then becomes very important to classify what kind of style you posses when it comes communicating information about your business. Since we are in the information business, let’s concentrate on how we write an article. Properly written your article should encourage your reader to read the next sentence and the next one and the next one and so on. Before we tap the first keystroke, we need to discover our own identity. Who we are determines how we communicate, whether verbally or the written word. As you will find out near the end of this article, time and priorities become very important.
Prejudices
Now before you think you don’t have any prejudices, let me remind you, you do. No matter the subject matter you want to convey, it started with a prejudice view of that subject. That bias will influence how your article is written and how your views are expressed. I don’t look at that as a negative. Each of us see things through our own eye gate. If I mention the words for example, republican and democrat, your prejudices would begin to come out if we communicated with each other. They have been formed over time, through experiences and observations. If you chose to write about these topics your viewpoint would subtly be woven into your words. Now take a look at it from the reader’s perspective. They arrived at your site with prejudices as well. Determining what those prejudices and bias’ are will go a long way towards your bottom line. Why is that ?
Because you then tell your story framed around what they already believe. The readers of this site come here, at least I hope, to read about home based business opportunities. With a few exceptions every post on this site will contain thoughts and ideas about home based business. That is deliberate and intentional. I am not trying to change their minds about what they already believe. I am trying to affirm what they already believe.
Procrastinator, Perfectionist or Both
Are you a procrastinator? Are you a Perfectionist? Perhaps you are cursed with being both. Regardless of which one you are, identify it and stop fighting it. Success in your home based business can be achieved with any of the 3. You are who you are, and this article isn’t going to change that, but hopefully it can give you some direction and guide you to being profitable.
Procrastinators typically take on any assignment. No challenge is too big. They simply jot down what it is, either accept or set a deadline and wait it out. Personally I have a bit of this in myself. I will generally self impose deadlines as a means of motivating myself. An example would be before I go to work I may think of different ideas and jot down a few titles to articles. I usually get home from work around 10 PM. I may chat with a few online friends and unwind until midnight, and then give myself an hour to pound out an article. Those friends who are nearby have learned to stay away at this point, because now I have become laser focused. Why? Because of the deadline. Some days I wish I could change that. I have learned not to fight it.
Perfectionists spend time in preparation. They want to get it right the first time. They will not delay the start of an article or project for fear that the finished product wont be, well perfect. The down side is they sometimes can get bogged down in that preparation and they never seem to hit their own standard, which will leave them frustrated and promising themselves, it will be perfect next time, and it never is. The fact that we are in the business of providing information that people hopefully will read compounds the problem of reaching perfection. Admit it, all of us check out site stats. They become our barometer of success. How many visitors? Which articles are read? Which one got Stumbled? How many comments? These stats provide either validation for our product or, as is the case most of the time, failure in our goal of being perfect. We just never get enough response do we? Tip of the day; you are not perfect, your writing is not perfect and it will never be
Some of us are cursed with being both procrastinators and perfectionists, which means you will set a minimum amount of time and expect a perfect product at the end. Frankly I don’t like being here, but it is who I have become. I seem to thrive on the pressure of the deadline and friends and loved ones have learned to just stay out of my way when I’m in the zone. The dog and my girlfriend usually pay the price for this quirky part of my personality.
By the way I asked my girlfriend to read this post before publishing it. About the only thing she said was, “see you always put that dog ahead of me” Priorities folks, I need to go fix that, I think she was serious. It’s time for some quality time with her, right after I take Cody for a walk.
This post ran a little over an hour and I was in the zone, but my sweetie changed all that. My next post will detail exactly step by step how I plan, draft, and post my articles. Subscribe to my feed and make sure you don’t miss it.
