istock_000004501935xsmall.jpgYour home based business is going to reach a point where you can’t do anymore. You work and work and never seem to get past the point where you want to be. It’s funny the way that works. You get a glimpse of your dream but it always seems just out of the reach of your hands.

Why? It’s because you’re trying to reach for it with your hands and as you have discovered, you can only put your hands on so many things in a given day or week. Your plans for the expansion of your dream are at a standstill. You will have to expand your business with your brains, not your hands. You need an employee or a partner. They need to be the right fit. Here are a few things you should consider before partnering with anyone.

It will be difficult for anyone to find the right person or person that share the kind of passion and vision you have for your home based business. After all it’s your dream. That should not prohibit you from looking. When I was 23 years old I decided I was going to open a business. I would service restaurant equipment. I would have a fleet of service vehicles and be rolling in cash. It was a can’t miss proposition in my mind.
As I explored my options I was approached by a family member about becoming a partner. My brother and I started the business in November of 1979. I would sell my interest to him in 1993. As it turned out had I paid heed to what I’m about to tell you I might still be there.

Are they walking their talk?

Observe potential partners closely. Just as in personal relationships time is a great revealer of the truth in a person. Remember when you told your girlfriend how much you loved going to the mall when you met her? Or how you told your new boyfriend hwo you loved baseball? Often times it takes time before the warts to surface. Be sure everyone has them

Are they just like you?

That’s not what you need. A partner should challenge you to step outside your comfort zone. As long as your character isn’t compromised, don’t be afraid of someone who looks at the world a little different. You have strengths and weaknesses . Look for someone who gives you balance. Two heads are better than one as long as the intent of the heart is in the same place

Integrity and Character

Earlier I told you about my business venture as a young man. As it turned out my partner could lie as well as he could breathe. It reached a breaking point. Folks if someone lies to others, it’s a matter of time before they lie to you. Believe it. Character should be a high priority factor in your search for a partner. I think this quote says it best about character

Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that’s right is to get by, and the only thing that’s wrong is to get caught. ~J.C. Watts

My next post will deal with some of the dangers and consequences of going it alone. Until then feel free to leave a comment. I hope you all have a glorious Easter.

Great post Don. I love the quote from J.C.Watts. It is so fitting to the whole “theme” of your post.

I also agree in terms of choosing your partners wisely fro business. I could tell you some horror stories of close friends who lost everything because of this.

Often strangers make better business partners than friends and family anyway.

It’s true, partners are like a spouse, you dont live with them but depend on them in many of the same ways.

I am so happy the site is back up!

Solid Friends are the most important thing in life. Glad to see you have some great people in your life.
